One of the top places we have all been dying to have a backstage pass to is Brigitte McQueen Shew's incredible creation: The Union for Contemporary Art. After a deep discussion on DEI last month, Brigitte opened her doors to us to show us possibilities. The Union "was founded on the belief that the arts can be a vehicle for social justice and greater civic engagement" and as this is their second building, they have been able to add many more services to the north Omaha community.
Let me gush a moment: I admire her like a non-profit rockstar. It wasn't enough to create an incredible space for artists and the community to explore, but she find a way to use these passions to truly help and alter the neighborhood for the better. (Insert applause here)
If you haven't explored their space on 24th and Lake, GO. Join their co-op and get access to printmaking classes, photography classes, ceramic lab, sewing exploration, and many more possibilities. This is a place to unlock your creativity. See a play written by a black playwright. Lose your self in the current exhibits. Help them garden in the summer.
